About Us

Based in Ellesmere Port, Ultrascan Non-Destructive Testing Ltd carries out marine and industrial Non-Destructive Testing in the UK and worldwide.

Formed in 1986, the company is an Associate Member of the British Institute of NDT, a Member of the Service Inspection Group, and an Associate Member of the Safety Assessment Federation (SAFed).

We carry out testing in the marine, petrochemical, process, transport and manufacturing industries; on pressure vessels, pipelines, storage tanks welded/riveted structures, locomotives, shafts, presses, boilers and bridges.

Operators are trained and qualified to PCN (Personnel Certification in NDT) standards and hold certificates in Site Safety Training and Confined Space Entry.

Inspection Services

Ultrascan offer the following high-level inspection services:

EEMUA-159 Tank Inspection

EEMUA-159
Comprehensive inspection methodology for above-ground storage tanks following EEMUA Publication 159 guidelines. Combines multiple NDT techniques to assess tank integrity, corrosion, and structural condition.

Typical Applications

Storage tank integrity assessment, floor plate inspection, shell wall evaluation, corrosion mapping

API-570 Pipeline Inspection

API-570
Specialized inspection program for piping systems following API 570 standard. Utilizes risk-based inspection methodology to evaluate piping integrity and determine appropriate inspection intervals.

Typical Applications

Process piping systems, pipeline integrity management, corrosion assessment, fitness-for-service evaluation

Ship Hull Thickness Survey

UTM
Ship hull thickness measurement (TM) surveys are mandatory inspections required by classification societies to assess vessel structural integrity using ultrasonic testing techniques on hull plating, ballast tanks, and critical structural components.

Approvals

Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, DNV and ABS for UTM of Hull Structures.

NDT Methods

Comprehensive non-destructive testing solutions to ensure the integrity and safety of your critical assets.

UT

Ultrasonic Testing

UT
Uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal flaws, measure thickness, and characterize materials. Sound waves are transmitted through the material and reflections are analysed to identify discontinuities.

Typical Applications

Weld inspection, thickness measurement, corrosion detection, structural components, pressure vessels

PT

Penetrant Testing

PT / DPI
A liquid penetrant is applied to the surface and drawn into surface-breaking defects by capillary action. After cleaning, a developer reveals the location and extent of surface discontinuities.

Typical Applications

Surface crack detection, non-porous materials, machined parts, forgings, welds

MT

Magnetic Particle Testing

MT / MPI
Ferromagnetic materials are magnetized and iron particles are applied to the surface. Magnetic field distortions caused by defects attract the particles, making discontinuities visible.

Typical Applications

Steel components, automotive parts, railroad wheels, crane hooks, surface and near-surface defects

EC

Eddy Current Testing

ECT
Electromagnetic induction creates circular electrical currents in conductive materials. Changes in these currents indicate the presence of defects, material variations, or dimensional changes.

Typical Applications

Crack detection through coatings, coating thickness

VT

Visual Testing

VT
Direct visual examination of surfaces using the naked eye or optical aids such as magnifiers, borescopes, or cameras to detect surface discontinuities and assess general condition.

Typical Applications

General inspection, weld quality, corrosion assessment, dimensional verification

TT

Thermographic Testing

TT / IRT
Infrared cameras detect temperature variations on surfaces. Defects alter heat flow patterns, creating thermal signatures that indicate subsurface discontinuities or material variations.

Typical Applications

Composite materials, electrical systems, building diagnostics, delamination detection
